Rt Hon Jim Bolger ONZ
For services to public leadership, economic development, and national prosperity.
The Rt Hon Jim Bolger ONZ was one of New Zealand's most influential leaders, guiding the country through a period of significant economic, political, and social change while remaining deeply connected to the values of ordinary New Zealanders.
Born in Taranaki and raised on a farming family background, Jim entered Parliament in 1972 and served as Prime Minister from 1990 to 1997. During his leadership, New Zealand navigated major economic transformation and increasing engagement with the global economy. His pragmatic approach, commitment to fairness, and willingness to make difficult decisions helped shape the modern New Zealand economy.
For the Waikato, one of his most significant legacies was supporting the Waikato–Tainui Raupatu Settlement in 1995, a landmark agreement that laid the foundation for reconciliation and helped create one of New Zealand's most successful Māori economic development stories. The settlement continues to have a profound impact on the region's prosperity and future growth.
Following his political career, Jim continued to serve New Zealand through leadership roles including Ambassador to the United States, founding Chairman of Kiwibank, Chairman of KiwiRail, and Chancellor of the University of Waikato. His commitment to education, public service, and opportunity for future generations remained a defining feature of his life.

The Rt Hon Jim Bolger ONZ is inducted posthumously into the Waikato Business Hall of Fame in recognition of his enduring contribution to New Zealand's economic development, public leadership, and the long-term prosperity of the Waikato region.
