Raised on a dairy farm in Putāruru, Sir Henry built a successful farming career before being elected by his fellow farmers to leadership roles within the dairy sector. He joined the board of the New Zealand Dairy Group in 1992 and became Chairman in 1999, playing a pivotal role in one of the most significant transformations in New Zealand business history.

As a key architect of the creation of Fonterra, Sir Henry helped unite New Zealand's dairy cooperatives into a single global enterprise. During his decade as Chairman, Fonterra became the world's largest dairy exporter, strengthened New Zealand's position in international markets, and helped drive growth across the wider economy. He also oversaw the establishment of Global Dairy Trade, which continues to influence dairy pricing worldwide.
