Ata mārie,
Employment Leave Bill
Last week, the Employment Leave Bill was introduced to Parliament, a long-anticipated reform that will replace the Holidays Act 2003 and aims to simplify how employee leave and entitlements are calculated. The proposed legislation introduces a clearer, hours-based accrual system and other changes intended to reduce payroll complexity while ensuring employees receive the correct leave payments. The Bill has now passed its first reading and will move through the select committee process, where submissions will be invited. You can read the full Bill and learn more about the proposed changes here.

Commerce Commission Insights
Do you know how the Commerce Commission’s work impacts your business? From competition rules to fair trading, understanding the basics can help protect your business and ensure you are operating on the right side of the law. At our recent Westpac Smarts event held with the Commerce Commission, it was a good reminder for businesses to stay across their obligations under the Commerce and Fair Trading Acts. New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement (FTE)
There has been plenty of discussion around the proposed New Zealand–India FTE. Last week we hosted Minister for Trade Hon Todd McLay, India’s Consul General Dr Madan Mohan Sethi, and New Zealand’s Chief Trade Negotiator Vangelis Vitalis, where it was valuable for around 80 Waikato exporters to hear directly from those closest to the deal.
India’s 1.4 billion people and rapidly growing middle class represent a significant opportunity for Kiwi exporters. Success will take time and relationship building, but the insights shared last week gave businesses a clearer view of the path ahead. The India Trade team will be in Hamilton on 30 and 31 March for one-on-one meetings. Contact Rob to book an appointment and learn more.
Have a great week ahead,
The Chamber Team
