Welcome to the Chamber - Kiani Tuhua

We sat down with her to learn more about her background and to introduce Kiani to our members.

Hey Kiani, welcome to the team. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I spent much of my childhood living next door to my marae in Waiti, rural Waikato, and in Kirikiriroa, before heading across the ditch to Australia, where I lived for ten years before returning home.

Outside of mahi, my fiancé and I keep busy with our three kids (well, two are more or less adults now!), and our little one, who’s in primary school, has more sass than all of us combined! I love exploring, whether that’s out in the bush or wandering around a city. I’ve recently taken up Pickleball and yep, I totally get the hype, it’s so good! And of course, nothing beats quality moments with friends and whānau.

Tell us about your work history.

Alongside my role with the Waikato Chamber, I’m the Community Engagement and Partnerships Lead for the South Waikato Investment Fund Trust (SWIFT), a position I’ve held since 2022. Before that, my background spans banking, insurance, management, and sales in both Aotearoa and Australia. I’m also the co-founder of a wellbeing initiative called Māmā Glow.

What does your role at the Chamber entail?

I’m the main point of contact for the South Waikato business community. My role is all about building strong relationships, creating meaningful connections, and championing the district’s businesses so they can grow, adapt, and flourish. I focus on membership growth, engagement, and making sure the voices of our members are heard and supported. At the heart of it, this mahi is about helping people feel connected and confident in doing business in South Waikato.

What are your strengths and skills?

I enjoy building meaningful connections and bringing a calm, thoughtful energy into the spaces I work. I'm inclined to look at the bigger picture and love helping people and ideas grow. Whether it’s through great kōrero, problem-solving, or supporting our community, I’m here for it.

What are you looking forward to bringing to the Chamber?

There’s no better feeling than supporting and celebrating success at home, and in this space, South Waikato is home. Being part of the journey as local businesses, communities, and people grow and thrive here genuinely fills the cup.

Where is your favourite place in the Waikato?

It’s hard to pick just one—I feel so lucky to call Waikato my backyard. But if I had to choose, I’d say anywhere near the awa. Whether it's walking the river trails in Arapuni, or kayaking near Piarere, being close to the Waikato River gives all the feels.
